Delayed Reopening Of Scrap Iron Industry, Laments Association President

The local scrap iron industry will not reopen on Friday.

Confirmation of this comes from President of the Trinidad and Tobago Scrap Iron Dealers Association, Allan Ferguson.

Mr Ferguson said there are still many aspects which must be finalised before the industry is given the clearance to operate.

Last year, the government put a halt on the sector’s operations to ensure proper regulations after a hike in theft of copper even at state entities such as WASA and TSTT.

Speaking at a news briefing on Thursday, Mr Ferguson said the dealers are yet to acquire their export license.

He said next Wednesday a meeting will be held with all the stakeholders to fine tune areas in readiness for the reopening of the sector.

Mr Ferguson said there is also need to ensure documents are properly finalised which will be then be passed on to the Ministry of Trade.

He said the association will be more innovative and creative in how it conducts its affairs adding he is ready to work with all stakeholders.
