A one-year-old baby boy was the only one left unharmed after an assailant attacked his mother and grandfather.
21-year-old Joyce Rahaman who recently moved in with her father – 72-year-old Harrilal Jagroop – was found bleeding in the street by neighbours last Thursday night. She suffered a gunshot wound to her face. Jagroop, who also suffered a gunshot wound to his face, was found in a chair in the porch of the family’s Penal home beaten and bleeding. They were taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where they were warded in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Jagroop succumbed to his injuries over the weekend without regaining consciousness. Rahaman remains in the ICU.
Officers who responded to call retrieved a spent nine-millimetre shell and one nine millimetre live round from the scene. They believe the attacker may have jumped a fence at the back of the house and shot Jagroop. He then made his way to the bedroom where Rahaman laid in bed with her son.
Jagroop was the father of 17 children, grandfather of 26, and great grandfather of six. Reports indicate that Jagroop was attacked first. Neighbours and relatives who called the police were unable to say what caused the attack, but Rahaman is said to have recently ended a relationship.
Investigations are continuing.
