Cumuto/Manazanilla MP says government’s stance against conservationists will hurt turtles

Cumuto/Manazanilla MP, Dr. Rai Ragbir has come out in support of conservationists who have been seeking permission to be allowed onto the beaches at night, to monitor turtles during the nesting season.

In a media release, Dr. Ragbir said he laments the stance taken by the Health Minister that now should be the safest time for turtles.

Current Covid 19 health regulations stipulate that persons are not allowed on beaches between 6pm and 6am, due to COVID-19 restrictions.

However, Dr Ragbir says this decision is “ludicrous, bewildering, thoughtless and inhumane” as it leaves a 12-hour open window for poachers to conduct illegal trade out of the scrutiny of the public.

Ragbir said that leatherback turtles make this country its nesting ground, contributing to the country’s eco-tourism.
