Couva North MP Ravi Ratiram has issued a warning to persons occupying and building illegal structures near riverbanks.
“If you continue, you will face the full brunt of the law.”
The MP made the statement while touring flood prone areas in his constituency, on Friday morning.
Ratiram said persons occupying the riverbanks create difficulty for the relevant authorities to mobilize heavy equipment to clear watercourses.
He also revealed that some persons already have been served notice by the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation (CTTRC) to move.
“We will have to do what needs to be done to have these illegal structures removed,” he asserted.
Ratiram said the CTTRC had lobbied with the Ministry of Works for the clearing of watercourses and work had begun. However, the MP notes that the work was not being done properly.
