Couva man killed during shootout with police

An alleged shootout with Central Division police has resulted in the death of a Couva man.

Around 11.45 am, the Central Division Task Force – South and Central Division Gang Unit received information about illegal firearms at a house in Couva and visited the scene.

On arrival to the house at Grant Street Extension, they met Kiel Williams and notified the man that they had a warrant to search the premises.

The officers said Williams walked into a bedroom and pulled out an object resembling a rifle from under a bed, following which he exited the room and pointed the gun at them.

They reported that several shots were fired, forcing them to retaliate.

Williams was hit and fell to the floor, bleeding from the chest.
He was taken to the Couva District Health Facility by police but died shortly after arrival.
