CoP warns against publishing fake news online

Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith, is warning fake news may have destabilizing effects on a country, cause unnecessary panic amongst the general public or even affect the safety of members of the public.

In a media release Commissioner Griffith said on or around May 16th , a profile on social media platform, Facebook, published a completely false and misleading statement, advising that Prime Minister,  Dr  Keith Rowley “…had suffered a massive heart attack tonight and has died, my aunt who is a Minister has inform me…”

Commissioner Griffith is acknowledging members of the public have the right to freedom of speech, such rights ought not to be exercised without due consideration of its effects.

Commissioner Griffith reiterates to the population the need to balance responsibility with the constitutionally enshrined freedom of expression.
