CoP: CCTV footageof photo journalist hit and run not useful

There has been a set back in the case involving the death of sport photo journalist Anthony Harris.

Acting Police Commissioner McDonald Jacob has confirmed that the quality of the initial footage they acquired is too poor for officers to properly identify the B13 vehicle or driver involved.

However he disclosed police will be attempting to source CCTV footage of Saturday’s fatal hit-and-run accident from other nearby buildings.

Harris died from his injuries on Sunday.

Since the incident, questions have re-emerged about the functionality of CCTV cameras installed around the high-traffic area.

Responding to questions on Monday, Jacob said while the cameras are operational, the footage obtained from them could not help the investigating officers much.

He said there is some footage from their national camera grid which is not 100 per cent helpful to the investigators. However, they are doing something called canvassing, where they are looking at other buildings close by that have CCTV cameras.

Jacob said because the cameras on the national grid rotate on a regular basis, they may have missed parts of the fatal accident.

Jacob’s comment came even as Harris’ daughter, Charisse, reiterated her call for the driver to surrender to police.
