Prison officers may be bringing in contraband for use by prisoners.
During a search exercise at the Golden Grove Prison on Sunday and Tuesday of this week, prison officers confiscated cellular phones, chargers, headsets and makeshift knives. Prisons Commissioner Gerard Wilson said that they usually get tip offs from certain sources before they conduct the searches.
Wilson said there is always a risk of retaliation by prisoners when their items are seized. However, the Prison Executive collaborates with the police service and the Threat Assessment Unit to ensure the safety of his officers, adding and that all threats issued against prison officers are recorded. He described prison officers as “punching bags” since they act on information given to them by the police or other departments. As a result, they are often targeted by disgruntled prisoners.
