Coast Guard intercepts vessel illegally entering TT from Venezuela – 18 people detained

The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG) has apprehended 18 people who were attempting to illegally enter Trinidad and Tobago.

In a statement on Saturday, TTCG said while conducting patrols of the South Coast of Trinidad, the TTS SCARBOROUGH detected a vessel South East of Anglais Point, Palo Seco after it had crossed the border of Trinidad and Tobago from Venezuela.

It said the boarding party on board the TTS SCARBOROUGH pursued the suspect vessel and discovered it abandoned 1000 yards South of Anglais Point.

Searches of the area were conducted where luggage and other personal belongings were discovered.

Upon further investigation, the crew saw evidence of human activity which led to extensive searches of the nearby forest.

The Coast Guard said these searches led to the discovery of 18 people attempting to illegally enter Trinidad and Tobago. The non nationals have since been detained and processed in accordance with health and immigration protocols.
