Civil Society Group says amendments to Procurement Act will destroy its efficacy

Chairman of the Private Sector Civil Society Group, Winston Riley has raised concerns about the Public Procurement Amendment Bill 2020 due to be laid in Parliament today.

Riley, speaking at a virtual event hosted by the society group on Thursday, said the organization believes the amended document almost completely destroys the efficacy of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Property Act 2015.

He said that legislation, which has been partially proclaimed, was established to promote accountability, equity and local industry development in the public procurement and disposal of public property.

Mr Riley’s concern follows a statement by Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar that the proposed amendments will water it down and extract the teeth from the act.
