Children’s Authority Focused On Mental Health, Assures Director

The best interest of the child is the guide which will be used by the Children’s Authority when it comes to young ones being referred to the St Ann’s Hospital for assessment.

This is the response coming from Deputy Director, Care Services, of the Children’s Authority, Rhonda Gregoire Roopchand.

The senior official of the Children Authority made the remark during her response to a question posed to her about at Friday’s eleventh meeting of the Joint Select Committee on Social Services and Public Administration.

The Committee inquired into the mental and psychosocial services available to the population during the Covid-19 pandemic.

It also placed specific focus on measures to curb substance abuse and suicide.

Mrs. Gregoire Roopchand was asked by JSC Chairman, Paul Richards, what are her thoughts on children being referred to St Ann’s Hospital given the stigma attached to the institution over the years and parents’ and citizens’ concerns about this development.

Mrs. Gregoire Roopchand said family members are informed on the best approach on treating with the situation and their input is also taken into account.
