Child Welfare League Supports Sexual Offenders Undergoing Manadatory Counselling

The Child Welfare League of Trinidad and Tobago is in support of a proposal for sexual perpetrators to undergone a mandatory form of counselling as part of their rehabilitation.

It’s a suggestion which was highlighted by Project Manager of the Rape Crisis Society, Kimiko Scott.

Ms Scott was at the time being questioned at the seventh meeting of the Special Select Committee on the Sexual Offences Amendment Bill Number Three, 2021, on Monday.

Ms Scott said she is confident a mandatory form of counselling will be very useful adding already some offenders in the system have indicated their desire to be a part of such a process.

Meanwhile, Member of the Special Select Committee, Jayanti Lutchmedial, on the issue of stiffer penalties for crimes against children wanted to know from Ms Scott if she supports the traditional forms of sentencing or should there be a wider discretion or even stiffer sentencing.
