Chairperson of the Catholic Commission for Social Justice – “I’m surprised the statue is still up”

Chairperson of the ‎Catholic Commission for Social Justice, Leela Ramdeen said her personal view on the proposed removal of the Christopher Columbus statue is, that it should be placed in a museum in Moruga.

Speaking with Izzso Media this afternoon, Ms. Ramdeen said the country cannot deny the years of hurt indigenous people suffered under his reign.

Ms. Ramdeen said a statue should have a meaning of honor and not be a symbol of grief.

Ms. Ramdeen said while she understands while the Spanish Ambassador, Javier Carbajosa would want the statue to remain, based on Spain’s history and their legacy, she strongly believes it serves T&T no current value by it being immortalized in public.
