Carjacking suspects arrested following high speed chase

Two suspects, who were held by police officers following a high speed chase yesterday, are expected to be charged in connection with a robbery incident which occurred in Malabar.

The suspects, ages 17 and 21, received minor injuries, when the red Nissan Versa motor vehicle in which they allegedly stole from a woman in Malabar Friday morning, crashed and overturned along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in the vicinity of Grand Bazaar.

At 11.15 am on October 8th, police received a distress call from a female driver that after parking her vehicle in front of her home to open her gate, two men allegedly armed with firearms accosted her. The woman told the police dispatcher that the suspects entered the vehicle and drove away, escaping with her handbag which contained her valuables.

An all-points bulletin was issued and a number of units, inclusive of the Special Operations Response Team, Northern and North-Eastern Divisions Task Force, and the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch responded following which the vehicle was spotted and a high speed chase ensued.

The suspects, who reportedly lost control of the vehicle which later crashed, were taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex,
Mt. Hope, where they underwent medical treatment for minor injuries to their heads and limbs.

They were later discharged. Currently, a 17-year-old boy is in police custody at the Children’s Suite at the Maracas St. Joseph Police Station while the 21-year-old man is housed at the Arima Police Station.
Police also recovered the woman’s cell phone, an undisclosed amount of cash and the woman’s handbag which contained her valuables.

Investigations, led by PC Cheeyou, are ongoing as the suspects are expected to be charged sometime next week.
