Camille Robinson- Regis tells Maha Sabha: “My comments on child abuse was directed to the Opposition, not you!”

Lady Vice chairman PNM National Women’s League Camille Robinson- Regis says it’s unfortunate that the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha has extrapolated from what she said on the Political platform that was referring to the Maha Sabha.

She insisted that she was very specific in saying that the opposition UNC, instead of condemning child marriage, which according to the UN is a form of child abuse, brought 2 pundits to the Senate to advocate for child marriages.

Minister Robinson – Regis maintained that at no juncture did she seek to make a link between the UNC and the Maha Sabha.

Further to that she said in her opinion they are both two separate entities and only the foolish would intertwine religion with politics.

She said the Maha Sabha should be commended for pledging to assist in ending the scourge of child abuse.

So, places like the Shri Jayalakshmi Home mentioned in the Sabga Report would no longer hide under the guise of religion.

She also suggested that spaces like the National House for Family Reconciliation should also fall under the watchful eye of the Maha Sabha.

In 2017, the Miscellaneous Provisions Marriage Bill was passed in Parliament. This legislation amended other laws such as the Hindu Marriage Act, Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act, Orisha Marriage Act and the Matrimonial Proceedings and Property Act, to raise the legal age of marriage to 18, effectively outlawing child marriage.
