Calypso Monarch and Extempo competitions halted by TUCO – discussions with NCC set for Monday

The National Calypso Monarch and National Extempo Monarch Competitions 2022 have been temporarily halted.

The Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO) General Council met on Saturday and it was decided that these competitions be halted pending further discussions/negotiations between TUCO and the National Carnival Commission (NCC), which is to take place on Monday.

TUCO has said that upon conclusion of these discussions, a definitive position would be taken by TUCO, of which all members/participants would be appraised.

TUCO was allocated an estimated $1.5 million to finance their Carnival related event, but the union says that this is not enough to stage the Calypso and Extempo Monarch competitions.

The preliminary round of the Calypso Monarch competition has been postponed until further notice.

Seventy-two calypsonians registered to participate in the competition, the finals of which were expected to take place on February 27 during Dimanche Gras at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain.

The preliminaries were expected to take place on Friday and Saturday but Friday’s round was stopped less than 15 singers in, while Saturday’s round was cancelled.
