Businessman accused of running a brothel

A businessman is currently being held and investigated on allegations of running a brothel.

The man was among 51 persons held at Copacabana last Friday. Although no charges have been laid against him he is still in police custody. Eleven of the 35 women held during the operation have appeared before a Port of Spain Magistrate. Eight have been charged with entering the country illegally, while three women have been charged with the offence of prostitution. The other 24 women, who are between the ages of 18 and 32, are from Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. They are being questioned by officials from the Immigration Department.

The raid took place between midnight and 3:00am on Friday morning at the Copacobana club located along Dundonald Street in Port of Spain. Officers of the Port of Spain Division received intelligence which led them to conduct the operation. A total of 16 men were also held at the location, including the businessman, and are currently aiding police with their inquiries.
