A British nurse accused of the murder of eight babies and another 10 attempts at a hospital in the city of Chester appeared on Thursday in a court in northwest England. Lucy Letby, 30, was arrested on Tuesday and charged on Wednesday.
It is the third time that this nurse has been arrested in the middle of a major investigation into the death of babies in a neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
The charges against her date from June 2015 to June 2016 and relate to babies under one year old.
The nurse came to Warrington court by videoconference for a preliminary hearing that lasted only 10 minutes.
He spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.
Prosecutor Pascale Jones said there are “serious reasons” to justify that the accused remain in pre-trial detention “for her own safety”.
The judge kept her in prison until a new hearing at Chester Court, scheduled for Friday afternoon.
In May 2017, an investigation into the deaths of 15 babies was opened at the Countess of Chester Hospital, which then increased to include more cases.
