Brazil’s President breaks silence on election result but doesn’t acknowledge defeat

Brazil’s far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, has finally spoken for the first time since his defeat in Sunday’s presidential election but has refused to acknowledge the loss.

In a brief statement, Mr Bolsonaro simply thanked voters who had cast their ballots for him.

His chief of staff, Ciro Nogueira, has said however that the “process of transition” of power would begin.

Brazil’s Supreme Court has since said that by authorising the transition of power, Mr Bolsonaro had recognised the result of the election.
