Bodoe: Hinds needs to do more to support police at Oropouche, Fyzabad and Siparia stations

Fyzabad MP Dr Lackram Bodoe said the senseless killing of Darsan Trace resident Leroy Sifontis, and the shooting of another person on Thursday morning as they boarded a taxi for work is the latest of the continuing crime wave in our beloved country.

He said Fyzabad has seen an upsurge in crime in recent months, with murders, robberies and home invasions occurring on a regular basis.

According to Bodoe, the police are strapped for resources and seem unable to apprehend these criminals, in a timely manner.

“Business is suffering in an already depressed economy, with increase in joblessness and financial hardship being experienced by an increasing number of constituents. This latest killing of a breadwinner on his way to make a living for his family is to be condemned. People continue to live in fear, as they go about their business of making a living, and even in their own homes. There is a pervasive sense of hopelessness amongst Fyzabad residents, as they worry about their safety on a daily basis,” he added.

Bodoe also noted that the closure of Petrotrin in 2018 has reeked havoc on the local economy, as limited job opportunities have emerged for those who lost their jobs.

He said: “The continued lack of opportunities for young people, and for highly educated citizens adds to their frustration.”

“I call upon the Minister of National Security to do more to support the police at the Oropouche, Fyzabad and Siparia Police stations to enable them to apprehend criminals in a more timely manner, as well as to prevent crime by increasing patrols in the various communities. I also call upon the Government to create more economic, sporting, cultural and other opportunities for constituents, to add to those already provided by local non-governmental organisations.”
