Minister of Energy and Energy Industries Franklin Khan said that the drilling of the BHP deepwater Well Broadside- 1 will be the deepest well ever drilled in Trinidad and Tobago.

Khan said that the area has not been drilled before, and if all goes well they do intend to drill deeper as BHP found oil seeps in the Le Clerc and Victoria wells sometime in the past.

BHP intends to drill 132 nautical miles off the east coast of Trinidad and oil production is expected to peak at 80,000 barrels per day.

BHP has a fleet of six marine vessels inclusive of a heavy lift crane barge.

Khan said the future of the energy sector lies within underwater drilling.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said the Government gave BHP the commitment it will do all that is necessary to facilitate the success of the programme by amending the various production sharing contracts, where appropriate, the ensure exploration success.

Dr. Rowley also announced a new project that is underway.
