On the heels of Sunday’s withdrawal by Devant Maharaj from the UNC internal elections due to what he claims are irregularities, contender for leadership Vasant Bharath says he shares a similar perspective to Mr Maharaj, in terms of transparency of the electoral process.
Speaking to Power 10fm this morning, Bharath said one of the issues that had occurred in the past is the irregularities in the process, which he raised in 2017 and it has still not been addressed.
He said “We’re now asking for representatives on the elections committee, we’re now asking what has happened to the general secretary, who seems to have gone missing in action, or there seems to be no general secretary of the party in place, which is a creature of the constitution of the party and we are also asking for observers of the election due to previous allegations of irregularity.”
Bharath said there is also the issue of collusion between the candidate, Kamla Persad-Bissessar and the internal elections committee, with regards to the production of an elections manual.
He said there are too many things in the public domain that has given rise to question marks over the entire process and they need to resolve these things before the election kicks in.
Bharath said he has written to both the chairman of the elections committee, asking for a meeting of all of the candidates to try and resolve these matters, so as not to further bring the party into disrepute and he has also written to Mrs Persad-Bissessar asking that they sit down and try to resolve these matter internally.
