Beenie Man and Bounty Killer’s Verzuz Battle ‘Slap Weh D Dance’

Verzuz brought fans to Jamaica, with a classic 90s-style sound clash between two dancehall icons: Beenie Man and Bounty Killer, that had viewers asking Wah Gwaan’. Both men are beloved in the dancehall community and are credited with helping the genre transcend Jamaica’s borders and achieve worldwide acclaim.

Unlike other “Verzuz” battles, the two legends went head to head in the same room, essentially reminiscing the look and feel of a match-up live concert.

Both Grammy-award winning reggae stars delivered their massive catalogs of hits like Bounty Killa’s “Hey Baby,” “You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No)” and “Hip Hopera,” and Beenie Man laying his arsenal for tracks like “Who Am I,” “Girls Dem Sugar” and “King Of The Dancehall,” that fans have known them for over decades.

As online viewership climbed, police showed up and interrupted the streambut Beenie Man was seen repeatedly trying to explain that they were playing to an international audience of hundreds of thousands. “The police are here, but we’re not stopping. Because before COVID-19 it was murderers killing people, it was people killing people. Then COVID-19 started killing people. So we do this,” Beenie said. However, the police left and the concert was allowed to resume.

An estimated 470K viewers logged in to enjoy the dancehall phenomenal online, as Jamaican cultural influences and a Caribbean appreciation was seen by many celebrities and artistes who chimed in like Diddy, JaRule, Popcaan, Erykah Badu, Missy Elliott, Safaree, Konshens, Idris Elba, Ashanti, DJ Khaled, and Caribbean superstar Rihanna, who was mentioned by Bounty “RiRi you see me and Beenie. And she said wee wee”.

Also, Jamaican Prime Minister, the Honourable Andrew Holness twitted his praise: “Enjoying the clash of two veterans, Beenie and Bounty. Jamaica’s culture is global.”

Back in the day, Bounty Killer and Beenie Man had a rivalry that makes the energy of Verzuz all the more worthwhile.

Their Verzuz battle was fantastic and fans can’t stop talking about it. Watch it on Instagram Live or catch the replay on YouTube.
