Bail denied for 32-year-old man charged with rape, sexual assault

A 32-year-old man was denied bail yesterday after appearing virtually before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate charged with two counts of rape and two counts of grievous sexual assault to a woman.

The accused, who resides in San Juan, was arrested by a team of investigators attached to the San Juan Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on October 4th.

The arrest came following a distress call made to police on Monday night by a woman who claimed she was sexually assaulted by a man and was prevented from leaving his residence.

Police immediately dispatched units from the North-Eastern Division Task Force and rescued the woman from the location. She was subsequently taken to seek medical treatment and the suspect handed over to the San Juan CID.

During the course of the investigation, supervised by W/Cpl Rivers, and conducted by PCs Ramdeen and Berkley, police learnt that on the night in question, the woman was allegedly made to perform a series of sexual acts on the suspect against her will. The woman told police she managed to call for help when the suspect fell asleep.
Following further enquiries, the suspect was charged by PC Ramdeen of the San Juan CID with the offences.
