Attorney says he’s satisfied with checks and balances under which bail can be granted

An attorney is satisfied with the various checks and balances currently in place under which bail can be granted even on more than one occasion to a person.

The Bail Amendment Act 2019 which was passed in the parliament says anyone who is before the court for a serious crime which carries penalties of ten years and more in prison that individual will not qualify to be considered for bail if he is arrested for another serious crime.

This point was emphasised by lawyer, Fareed Ali, during an interview with News Power Digital Friday morning.

The interview was done in light of concerns raised by a senior police official about persons getting bail repeatedly for various offences committed.

However, Mr Ali said even when this occurs there are provisions in the legal system under which such can be permitted.

Mr Ali explained persons may be denied bail if when they are given bail they commit another offence.

The lawyer said that in itself prevents the person from being a proper candidate for bail moving forward.
