Agriculture Ministry sets up four teams to help eradicate locust infestation

The Moruga grasshoppers, commonly called “locusts” have been destroying crops in South Trinidad, along with crops in Rio Claro and parts of Mayaro.

As a result of this devastation to farmers, Agriculture Minister Kazim Hosein has announced that four teams have been set up to eradicate the pests.

Hosein said: “The Ministry has set up dedicated teams in four county offices to address the problem at a community level.”

He added: “Targeted spraying of chemicals using mist blowers and boom sprayers is utilized along the perimeter of the infested forests to destroy the insects at the hopper stage.”

Hosein said an educational campaign is also underway in the affected communities.

“We are educating citizens on best and safest practices, and we will work collectively to ensure the situation is effectively managed,” he revealed.

He encouraged citizens to report to the Ministry if the grasshoppers are seen.

Last week, Mayaro/Rio Claro MP Rushton Paray called on the Ministry to make available all possible resources to the Locusts Eradication Teams.

He said: “Thousands of insects had swarmed the communities, destroying food crops and causing loss and great inconvenience to residents.”
