A 45-year old man is currently in police custody in Venezuela after he is suspected to be involved in trafficking an eight-year old boy.
The suspect, Luis Antonio Gamardo Acosta, who is believed to be part of a human trafficking ring, took the boy from Güiria, Venezuela to Trinidad.
The boy is reported to be staying with a family in the country.
According to Venezuelan media company Pitazo, the man brought the boy to T&T with his parents who then left by boat.
The blue and white boat, known as ‘Yrais Alexander’ that was used to transport the boy was also called into question, as it was once intercepted by Trinidad and Tobago’s Coast Guard officials at sea.
Police recovered the boat along with four life jackets, a cell phone and two offboard engines.
An official from the the Corps of Investigations, Scientific, Criminal and Criminalists (Cicpc) said, “it is a band responsible for moving people without the respective legal documentation to exit the country and that for each person they charge up to US $300.”
