70 persons were ticketed for various traffic offences in the North-Eastern Division

Police officers of the North-Eastern Division (NED) ticketed 70 persons for various traffic offences yesterday.

The tickets were issued during a roving exercise by officers of the NED Traffic Unit, led by Sgt (Ag.) Blake.

Of the total tickets issued, 28 were given to drivers for failing to wear a seatbelt, 23 for parking on a footpath and eight for speeding.

Officers also targeted errant road users who were using handheld devices while in charge of a vehicle, breaching traffic signs,
improper overtaking, and causing unnecessary obstruction.

The exercises were conducted along the Lady Young Road, Morvant, St. Joseph Old Road, Laventille, Priority Bus Route and other commercialised areas within the Division.

In September 2020, Snr Supt Maharaj assured residents and business owners of the NED in a meeting with the Barataria/San Juan Business Association that a holistic approach will be taken to address the issues of traffic congestion and police visibility, particularly throughout heavily-trafficked, commercialised areas.

The NED has since revamped its Traffic and Patrol Unit which has been focusing primarily on decongesting traffic and policing errant
road users.

Foot patrols have also been augmented and have had a calculated strategy in treating with traffic issues surrounding businesses and
their security.

NED Traffic Officers are urging road users to always practice road safety and to adhere to all traffic regulations as the TTPS thrust
towards reducing road traffic accidents and fatal injuries.
