7 Venezuelans among 9 detained with contraband and protected animals in Mayaro

Nine persons, seven of whom are Venezuelans, were arrested yesterday after police allegedly discovered a number of protected animals and a quantity of contraband at a house in Mayaro.
Yesterday afternoon, officers of the Mayaro Criminal Investigations Department, Task Force and Emergency Response Patrol, proceeded to a house at San Sucker Road, Mayaro, where they executed a search warrant for firearms and ammunition.

During the search, police officers instead allegedly found a number of protected birds in undersized cages and a turtle. The team reportedly also discovered a quantity of food items, which detectives believe, were illegally imported.

The Ministry of Agriculture Games Warden Department and Immigration Division are currently lending support to the investigations.

The Venezuelans will be quarantined at the Chaguaramas Heliport. Two local men are also detained in connection with the seizures.
Investigations are ongoing.
