40 % of women in T&T do not seek antenatal care before mid pregnancy

Despite healthcare being widely available in Trinidad and Tobago, 40 % of women in T&T do not seek antenatal care before mid pregnancy.

This is the information provided by Director of Women’s Health at the MOH, Dr. Adesh Sirjusingh. Dr. Sirjusingh gave the information on an interview on Power 102 Digital this morning. Dr. Sirjusing was responding to a question related to the Ministry of health’s roll out for vaccination of pregnant and breastfeeding women in Trinidad and Tobago today.

Dr. Sirjusingh identified that pregnancy during the present pandemic puts pregnant women at higher risk. He said additionally several other conditions raise the risk levels for pregnant women including hypertension
and diabetes.

He said it is very important for some to seek and receive regular antenatal care from the time their pregnancy is confirmed.

Dr. Sirjusingh stressed the importance of regular checkups for pregnant women because of the increased risk to pregnant women.
