30% drop in weekly COVID cases

Epidemiologist Dr Avery Hinds has revealed that there has been a 30% drop in the weekly total of COVID-19 cases.

Speaking at Saturday’s Ministry of Health media briefing, Dr Hinds said this week’s decrease follows a 10% reduction the week of May 30th to June 5th.

He said there were just over 2,200 cases being recorded between June 6th and Saturday.

Dr Hinds said they are hoping the decreasing trend continues to manifest itself going forward.
“It is encouragement to continue doing what we are doing because the numbers are still not small but the numbers are decreasing so we need to make sure we continue doing what we are doing to continue that breaking force and slowing of the epidemic at this point in time.”

Meanwhile, there has also been a decreased in Covid hospital occupancy.

Principal Medical Officer, Institutions, Dr Maryam Abdool-Richards, said the average number of people admitted to the hospitals per day also decreased from around 66 to 72 people to 51 to 46 over the past week.

She added that occupancy numbers at hospitals levelled off at around 610 to 625 and ward occupancy at were around 60 per cent
