Virologist: T&T will experience another surge in Omicron variant

Trinidad and Tobago will experience another surge of the Omicron variant.

This is according to Virologist Chris Oura.

The Omicron sub-variant BA.5, which is causing widespread infection across the globe, has now been detected in Trinidad and Tobago.

Confirming this yesterday, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Roshan Parasram said one case was detected last Friday.

Speaking during the Minister of Health’s virtual news conference yesterday, Dr Parasram said the sub-variant may also cause an increase in the number of Covid cases.

However Virologist Chris Oura told News Power Now this morning that Trinidad and Tobago will experience another spike of the virus.

The WHO says with Omicron that there is a significant growth advantage compared to other variants of concern.

Omicron is overtaking Delta in terms of circulation, and it is very efficiently transmitted between people, a fact that was echoed by Oura this morning.

He also warned of the high possibility for the formation of variant outside of Omicron.
