13 arrested in Central Division -firearm, cocaine, monkey seized

An anti-crime operation conducted yesterday by the Central Divisional Task Force Area South led to the arrest of 13 persons including non-nationals and the seizure of a firearm, illegal narcotics and contraband.

Between 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm on August 8, 2024, officers carried out searches in known drug hotspots in the Couva and Freeport districts. While searching an abandoned building on Soobran Street, Dow Village, California, 10 illegal Venezuelan nationals were discovered, the officers also seized 8 grams of cocaine and a Capuchin monkey, which was subsequently handed over to the Forestry Game Warden Officers.

The team then proceeded to Greig Street, Balmain Village, Couva. There, they searched a 46-year-old man from Moruga, and discovered 44 grams of cocaine in his possession.

Additionally, two other men from Couva were also arrested after officers found them in possession of quantities of cocaine. All three suspects were taken to the Couva Police Station.

The operation continued on Junon Street Extension, California, where officers and K9 units searched bushy areas and abandoned buildings. During the search they found a revolver, along with two rounds of .38 caliber ammunition. These items were seized and taken to the Couva Police Station.

This operation was coordinated by Senior Superintendent Simon, Superintendent Glodon, Acting ASP Ablacksingh, and Inspector Sylvan, and executed by members of the Central Divisional Task Force Area South under the supervision of Sergeant Blackman and Acting Corporal Sarran.

The operation also involved the Caroni K9 Unit, the Immigration Department, and the Forestry Division.
