12 arrested in series of anti-crime exercises

Officers of the Southern and Central Divisions began the weekend with a series of Anti-crimes exercises resulting in the arrest of twelve persons and the seizure of firearms, and ammunition, a quantity of marijuana, and cocaine.

In Freeport the exercise began on Friday 10th March and included officers from the Freeport Criminal Investigation Department and officers from the Freeport Chargeroom.

The operations concentrated on drug blocks, and persons of interest in Mission Road and Arena Road, Freeport as several searches were conducted and search warrants executed. Based on the information received, the officers proceeded to a busy area off Parbatia Trace in Chase village, where a search was conducted and during the search, the officers seized a plastic bag containing a component of a firearm. The officers also seized a quantity of marijuana.

As the exercise continued, the searches were extended to other areas of the Central Division. During a search in Carapichaima one rifle magazine with fifteen rounds of ammunition were seized under debris of a staircase in an abandoned building. One of the officers had cause to stop and search a 20-year-old man, during the search, a quantity of cocaine was found hidden in his pocket. Two men were also arrested; they are both the subject of ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, in the Southern Division, nine persons were arrested on various charges related to drug and firearm possessions, the suspects ranging in age from 19 years to 42 years.
The exercise was co-ordinated by Snr Supt Smith, ASP Jaikaran, Inspector Ramlogan and included officers of the Southern Division Task Force and the K9 Unit.
